English Excellence Partnership | Improving the educational outcomes of all students in the city of Stoke-on-Trent

The English Excellence Partnership (EEP) is an ‘Opportunity Area’ funded project formed in the spring of 2019 with one simple aim: to improve the educational outcomes of all students in the city of Stoke-on-Trent.

We believe that the subject of English plays a vital role in a student’s development, providing learners of all abilities with the chance to gain communication, literacy and critical thinking skills that will benefit them greatly in later life. Our objective was to create purposeful and productive links between our primary and secondary schools, in order to facilitate students’ confidence in the key disciplines of reading and writing, as well as provide staff with a number of CPD opportunities to enhance their teaching practice. We focused our efforts on two crucial phases of students’ progression: the first being the transition from KS2 to KS3 and the second being the culmination of their secondary school experience of English at KS4.

Across both these areas we have sought to utilise a variety of internal and external expertise to integrate proven, innovative pedagogical methods which can enhance students’ daily experiences of English. Consequently, over the last academic year, we have run a wide range of initiatives ranging from the creation and uptake of a city-wide scheme of learning which bridges Years 6 & 7 on Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’ – through to bespoke GCSE Saturday masterclasses for our KS4 students, run by experts from across the city – to enrichment activities such as ‘Poetry with Punch’ led by Matt Windle (the boxing poet). Due to the success of these actions, our funding was extended into 2021, where we will continue to strive to provide enriching, academically centred experiences for the young people and staff of our fantastic city.
